Ingerlise's Travelling Diary
February 2nd: We are sitting on a train on the ninth day of our journey around India. We are on the way back from Theni to Chennai, and it has been a series of eventful days. We arrived in India on the 20th after a long trip, and already since then we have had a lot of services and seminars, and a few long journes by train car.
Recently we visited the childrens' home in Theni, and we brought the children on an outing. Everywhere we are greeted with smiles and ”stuterum”, which means ”praise the Lord”. They are very eager to talk to us, but it is of course very difficult since many of them can't say many words in English (and we don't speak Indian). In most cases we have to settle for a smile and a handshake. Everything is different out here; culture, the style of services, and the ways in general, and yet people are the same - we have the same emotions, many of the same concerns and difficulties, and also the same joys.
It was a unique experience to visit the childrens' home in Theni. We arrived in the evening, and the children awaited with singing and waving when they saw us. Present were also the children from the Sunday school, its teacher, and Job with his family. We had a brief time of devotion, after which we gave them presents, cakes and candy for the children. Thy were thrilled about the T-shirts, I received as a donation from a Danish store, and they had to be tried on immediately. The fifteen-year-old sunday school teacher also enjoyed her T-shirt. There were a lot of happy faces and "thank you's" for us that eveningh. Job's wife made dinner for us, and the outing with the children on the next day was a warm one, where we probably had too much sun, but we had a good time, and as for the children, I believe that will be a day they'll remember a long time.
Yesterday (the 27th) we had a unique service in Dindigul, in which the major part of the attendants were Hindus. After having heard the gospel of Jesus Christ, who bore our sins and sickness on the cross, a lot came forward at the alter call (it was, however, difficult to tell how many came to receive the Lord as their savior, and how many came for healing, because there was no one to enterpret after the sermon).
We returned to Chennai around 9 PM, and on the next morning we held a seminar with Nelson's (30 kilometers south of Chennai). Everywhere there is both a great openness and a great hunger for the Word of God. Most sit with the Bible open and pen and paper, ready to note down what they don't want to forget.
Finally: Saturday the 1st of March, Maria and I again visited the childrens' home i Trivellore, app. 40 kilometers west of Chennai. A delightful experience, especially for Maria, around whom the girls flocked. Unfortunately we didn't have time to stay long, and the children didn't want us to go so soon. We received many kisses and hugs when we prepared to leave, and we were another experience richer! It was great to experience the openness and joy we met everywhere. We also briefly visited the pastor of the church in Trivellore.
Sunday morning we had a service in Open Door in Chennai, and in the evening we were back in Tambaram. The last seminar was held somewhere between Chennai and Tiruvallur at a place called Pattabiram, and then it was time to pack our suitcases for the last time on this journey. An eventful journey had come to an end, and we have already had responses from people who have been greatly helped and encouraged by what was preached in the services and the seminars.
We thank God that we yet another time was privileged to visit out brothers and sisters in the Lord in India, and we pray that God will continue to work in and through the people we met.
